THE PIETA

On September 20, Aileen and I had breakfast at Christos. Near the booth where we sat was a miniature of the Pieta that the restaurant had placed there.

Sculpted by Renaissance master Michelangelo in 1499, the Pietà depicts Mary cradling the body of Jesus across her lap following the Crucifixion. Housed in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, it is carved from a single block of white Carrara marble.

Pyramidal Composition: The structure forms a balanced triangle, anchored by the wide, flowing drapery of Mary's dress at the base and tapering up to her head.

Proportional Scaling: Michelangelo intentionally made Mary's body slightly larger than Jesus's so she could physically support his weight in her lap without the
composition feeling top-heavy.

Idealized Youth: Mary is depicted as exceptionally young and serene rather than aged or grief-stricken, emphasizing her purity and acceptance.

Realistic Anatomic Precision: The marble exhibits fine anatomical details, including subtle veins, relaxed muscles in Christ's body, and soft, naturalistic folds in the fabric.
